Continuing our "Collecting Pictures Across Alberta"

The Alberta Band Association’s official newsletter is continuing its online format. We are looking forward to continuing the programming that helps Alberta Music Teachers in their profession.

This year our Board of Directors is seeking the support of the bands across Alberta who are taking pictures of your Bands throughout the season. We are asking for FOIP’d photos of your bands on trips, in concerts, or just enjoying rehearsals. These photos will be collected for an upcoming project that will support all Alberta Bands in the future; however, we will need your pictures.

Please post your FOIP’d photos on Facebook, email them, or Tweet them to @AlbertaBandFeed.

If you would like to submit a short story, share your music trip pictures, or suggest that we highlight a musical event that takes place in your area, please feel free to drop us a line.

Calling for
Awards Nominations

Do you know a distinguished band director who needs to be recognized for their efforts and achievements? The ABA presents 3 awards annually to band directors that have made a difference.

The Keith Mann Award is presented annually to an outstanding new band director with fewer than 6 years’ teaching experience in the province of Alberta. Created to honour the memory of Keith Mann, the recipient will demonstrate Keith’s enthusiasm and dedication to band music.

The Vondis Miller Legacy Award, which was created in memory of Vondis Miller, is a long-service award recognizing an individual who has devoted many years to sharing the joys of music making with young people.

The Elkhorn Award recipient is chosen by former Elkhorn winners.

Nominations are accepted annually and should be accompanied by supporting documentation.

All three Awards are presented at the MCA Awards Banquet.
ABA members may download the Award Nomination Form.

Musicom in Detail:

Musicom President’s Message 2015

Darwin Krips

Welcome back to another exciting year of music! We hope that you have had a great startup and are getting ready to embark on a rewarding year.

The Alberta Band Association is excited to offer great programs to our members, such as our Band Director Boot Camps in Edmonton and Calgary, Music Conference Alberta, the High School Provincial Honour Band, the North and South Junior High Honour Bands and the Festival of Bands. Thank you for your continued support of these great programs.

The ABA is also excited and proud to be partnering with CADME to bring in Dale Lonis for Music Conference Alberta. We are looking forward to bigger and better joint projects with CADME in the future to support band education in the province.

In these more challenging economic times we encourage you to take part in our various programs. On October 22 to 24, 2015 Music Conference Alberta should be your number one destination for PD. Come out and network with your fellow colleagues and attend our great sessions. You will go home with some great concepts, ideas you can use immediately and hopefully a new colleague or two who can become your support network throughout the year.

2016 will be the 60th Anniversary of the ABA; the board will be rolling out a special project in January to help ensure another 60 years of support for band programs in Alberta. Stay tuned for how you can help support band education in the province of Alberta!

Have a great year and I look forward to meeting you at Music Conference Alberta!

Alberta Junior Honour Bands (North & South)

The Alberta Band association would like to encourage Band teachers to connect their students with other like-minded musicians in our provincial Junior High Honour Bands.

There are two Alberta Junior Honour Bands – North and South. Held in conjunction with respective teachers’ conventions in Edmonton and Calgary, the honour bands provide an advanced, auditioned performance experience for Alberta’s junior high school students. Top music educators in the province lead the students through three days of fun and intensive rehearsals.

Edmonton ‘Band Teacher Bootcamp’ report

–submitted by Lindsey Kemp

The Band Teacher Bootcamp went very well. Jayne Montgomery presented at Ottewell School on everything from how she chooses instrumentation to music, school politics and field trips. Fifteen people replied that they would attend, and eight came. It may have been because it was a Friday afternoon. The people that showed up were not only from Edmonton; some rural school teachers drove an hour in order to attend.

Brian T. and Jayne both provided some excellent materials for everyone to take with them. The meeting started at 5:30 PM. Jayne finished speaking at 7 PM, but everyone stayed until 8:30 PM to talk about more issues and ideas.

Someone asked if we could do this every couple of months and start a cohort where we check in with each other and continue to help each other throughout the year. So we will probably be holding one in November before Christmas concerts to see how everyone is doing. I will see if we could have another speaker like Roberta Baril to have another “topic” to present on.
